Cub Scout Pack 3 - Somerville, MA

Information for Volunteers

Pack 3, and all of Scouting, rely on every adult from every family to make a bit of time to pitch in and help out. Below, find some information geared toward adult family members and volunteers. Anything that should be here but isn't? Let us know!

Youth Protection Training

The BSA offers excellent training on how to protect young people from abuse, neglect, bullying, etc., how to identify and report suspected cases, how to prevent them from occurring, and how to empower young people to protect themselves. All BSA registered adult leaders are required to take and re-take this training every two years, and we also encourage every parent or guardian of every scout to take this training, even if they're not registered with the BSA. The core training takes less than 90 minutes, though there is additional supplemental training available for those interested. Steps:

  1. Visit the BSA online training system at training.scouting.org - from there, you need to create or log into your MyScouting account. Please make sure you are logged in as yourself, not your child or spouse
  2. Scroll down to find "Youth Protection Training" - click that, then click "Mandatory Youth Protection Training"
  3. Optional - also take the "Continution Education Youth Protection Training" course

How to register as a BSA volunteer

In order to run Cub Scout events--including den meetings--we always need to have at least two BSA-registered/trained volunteers present and in-charge. At least one of these registered leaders must be female if any non-male youth are present. So we always welcome and encourage adults to do this registration.

There is a bit of paperwork and a background check, and also an annual adult membership fee of $60. If you want to register as a volunteer, but the fee is a hardship for your family, please contact Pack 3 volunteer treasurer Donna Clark at treasurer@somervillepack3.org or donna.marie.clark@gmail.com; we may be able to help out.

Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Create or log in to your MyScouting account - make sure you're logged in as yourself

  2. Go to training.scouting.org and complete Mandatory Youth Protection Training while logged in as yourself - instructions above

  3. Complete a CORI Authorization Form online (link). You'll be asked to upload your ID.

  4. You'll get an email confirmation once you complete the CORI form. Please forward that email to registration@somervillepack3.org

  5. Log into your myscouting account again, then complete a Cub Scout Adult Volunteer Application (link) for Pack 3 - you will make an online payment of $61.80 using a credit or debit card

  6. Send another quick email to registration@somervillepack3.org and let us know you've completed the paperwork, so another adult volunteer can review and submit it

Once we've received the forms and payment/arrangements, it will still take several days for the BSA to do the background checks and process your registration. This is a completely new process this year, and there may be bumps. If you don't hear anything, please contact us (registration@somervillepack3.org) and let us know what's up. We'll help figure it out.

Finally -- don't forget to submit a BSA Health Form for yourself -- instructions here.
